Lego Star Wars Battles fulfills a huge hole in the Apple Arcade library by bringing subscribers the excitement of this genre without its pitfalls.

I've found the game's system of daily challenges and its "Season Path" (basically a free Season Pass) to be irresistible, and I've not missed a login bonus yet. For example, when my opponent played a group of stormtroopers who marched toward my base, I sent out a clan of Ewoks to quickly dispose of them, knowing in the movies the Ewoks hold their own just fine against the Empire. The card system in these games always takes some getting used to as you learn which cards work as strong punches and counterpunches against an opponent's cards, but the added bonus of this being based on Star Wars means most players will bring some foreknowledge with them. In my first week and then some with the game, I've always had enough coins to buy upgrades whenever they've been available to me, and the rarer crystals currency, which would normally be available for exorbitant in-app prices, is now doled out through fun days-long events and other more exciting ways. You can only compete and improve by playing, and the game is constantly rewarding you for doing so. They didn't need to consider the players who would spend a lot, spend a little, or not spend at all. Traditionally, this sort of game is mired in pay-to-win problems, but speaking with the team a few weeks ago when I got a chance to preview the game ahead of launch, they told me that making Lego Star Wars Battles without MTX actually makes it an easier project.

The genre is nothing short of a juggernaut on the standard App Store, but-and I'll say it for the millionth time-Apple Arcade improves games simply by removing ads and in-game purchases. Lego Star Wars Battles is the long-awaited debut of a quality PvP RTS on Apple Arcade. This latest spotlit game is well on track to become my greatest timesink of all. I can tell Apple Arcade is getting better because despite my busy schedule, I'm spending more and more time with thenew games in the library every single month.
